Both Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley and Los Angeles Lakers wing Matt Barnes got into tussles on Thursday night during summer league games, and while we usually don't have any problem with players going off on annoying hecklers, it's becoming apparent that both players could have handled their frustrations better than they did.
Beasley was indirectly being given the treatment by a fan over a blown referee's call. The Basketball Jones located the most-safe-for-work version we've seen yet:
Beasley's squad, 914, was lined up opposite Durant's Team Nike, as fans packed the uptown court to the brim - with some even climbing on trees to get a glimpse of NBA stars going head-to-head. In the second half, Beasley began jawing with some fans under the baskets, at one point shouting at the crowd "I get paid to do this!"
One of the fans behind a metal barrier, Garland Quince, a regular at Dyckman, was targeted and approached by Beasley. The 6-10, 235-pound power forward then placed one hand on Quince's head and shoved him backward.
"He just mushed me. He mushed me in my face," Quince said. "I was arguing about a Kevin Durant call and he just mushed me in my face."
Perhaps not the smartest reaction by the rarely Super Cool Beas.
Not as many people love Matt Barnes' game, but the rough and tumble Laker forward has gotten the job done as a defensive stopper and 3-point shooter during his eight-year NBA career. Barnes is no stranger to on-court altercations, though, and his pro bono work on Thursday night was no different.
It happened at the Kezar Pavillion during a game between Barnes's Dream Team and a team called East Bay.
Barnes apparently punched an East Bay player in the face, but the refs didn't see it and Barnes wasn't ejected from the game.
We're still waiting on any potential video from this altercation.
Can't blame this one on the lockout. Fights are fights, and here's hoping this will be the worst of it.
