Memphis coach Lionel Hollins, dating back to his days as a player with the Portland Trail Blazers, hasn't always been the cheeriest sort. But he's also a good coach who, for the second year in a row, has wrangled a top-heavy group of Grizzly goofballs into potential playoff contenders. The guy has obviously put in the work.
And, as a result, he likely hasn't had much time to watch his son Austin Hollins play that much this year, in his first season with the 16-6 Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Not that Hollins cares, anyway. From the Associated Press' Jon Krawczynski:
Memphis coach Lionel Hollins' son Austin is a freshman at the University of Minnesota. But dad said he doesn't watch his son play very often "because I don't like college basketball." Lionel said he gets frustrated by the slow pace.
I'm not exactly the biggest NCAA fan either -- something about 42 3-pointers a game and picking up your dribble after you pass the half-court stripe -- but ball is ball, and there are things you can find in every form of the game to keep you happy. I wouldn't for a second get on anyone for preferring NCAA ball, because there is no right or wrong in this situation. This is me being diplomatic and probably not altogether honest, but work with me.
And for Hollins to pass on his own son's games because he doesn't like the pace? Oh, man, that is some hardcore stuff. I can't help but love it.
"Dad! I scored 14 points off the bench! Did you see it?"
"Fourteen points, yeah. In a 68-point game."
Then he'd roll his eyes and go back to trying to teach Zach Randolph (in his 10th NBA season) how to pass out of a double team.
