Wesley Matthews had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day

This past Saturday was supposed to be a magical day for Blazers guard Wesley Matthews. In his first season in Portland, he has become one of the team's best players and a key figure in helping it to a strong showing without a fully healthy Brandon Roy. A solid performance in Game 1 against Dallas would make him known by more than just NBA diehards.

Things did not turn out quite as planned: Matthews finished with only two points, one rebound, a steal, and three turnovers in 19 minutes. Yet his bad game was only the topper on a disastrous day. Jason Quick has the story for The Oregonian:

It all started at the team's afternoon shootaround, when Matthews discovered both of his game shoes were for the left foot. The team's equipment staff, which packs the player's game gear, had to scramble to find another pair of Nikes that Matthews said weren't as comfortable as his usual shoes.

Back at the team's hotel after shootaround, Matthews ordered room service. "Just wanted some wings," Matthews said in a how-hard-can-that-be manner. The order took nearly two hours to arrive at his room.

Shortly after, he settled in for his habitual game-day nap, which was a success until his hotel room phone started ringing. He picked up and nobody was on the other end of the line. "You know that crucial part of your nap? Where it's almost the end of it? It woke me up in that last 30 minutes of the nap," Matthews said. "I was like, 'Aw, you gotta be kidding me."'

If I've learned one thing from reading way too many NBA twitter accounts for nearly two years, it's that you don't mess with a man's nap or room service. Given these developments, is it any wonder Matthews played poorly? If anything, I'd say he performed admirably under the circumstances.

There is as yet no indication if these problems were results of tomfoolery and shenanigans on the part of Mavericks fans. If they were, shame on these citizens of Dallas. If not, look for Matthews to bounce back for Game 2 Tuesday night.
